Using CFD to simulate a rowing boat is more complex than using the application to optimize a boats hull design, which is a common use for the technology, according to Filippi Lido, who owns Filippi Boats. While most boats are propelled through the water at a constant rate, a rowing boat moves forward with the crews rhythmic rowing action. As the boat accelerates and decelerates through each stroke, both the position of the boat and its attitude in the water are dynamically modified, which makes for a complex problem with multiple degrees of freedom. For the past year, engineers at Filippi Boats have been using Comet CFD software from CD adapco of New York. The boatmaker is also working with engineers at the Universita Politecnico di Milano to design the boats. The engineers simulate the periodicaccelerations caused by each stroke of the oars. How, wonders Dr. Stanley Taub, a New York City plastic and reconstructive surgeon, “is a prospective patient to know who is a diligent, excellent, caring physician and who is a charlatan?” Taub wants to disseminate information the public can use to select a cosmetic surgeon in a country now brimming with doctors calling themselves “cosmetic surgeons.” “Public law and policy do not necessarily protect us from unreasonable and untrue claims,” declares Taub. “A physician needs to be licensed in medicine which means earning a recognized medical degree–and can hang out a shingle in any specialty he chooses. The state does not control what area of medicine he practices or which type of specialist he says he is unless there are complaints and he is brought before the Office of Professional Medical Conduct. Four basic areas must be investigated–a physicians training, certification, associations and attitude toward his or her patients. “A physician should have and be willing to provide evidence that he or she has trained in the area of their expertise,” Taub states. “For example, patients want to locate a plastic surgeon who trained in plastic surgery, which means a post-surgical residency fellowship in the sub-specialty. Each residency or fellowship program gives a certificate [indicating] the dates of service as well as the hospital or department in which the physician trained.” Most physicians keep certificates and other diplomas framed in their offices. If these are unavailable, at least a curriculum vitae or brochure describing a doctors training should be available and carefully examined by the patient. “If a physician is either unable or unwilling to disclose this information, it becomes a clear issue of medical consumer beware,” Taub warns.

We extend the literature on Bayesian model comparison for ordinary least-squares regression models to include spatial autoregressive and spatial error models. Our focus is on comparing models that consist of different matrices of explanatory variables. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo model composition methodology labeled [MC.sup.3] by Madigan and York is developed for two types of spatial econometric models that are frequently used in the literature. The methodology deals with cases where the number of possible models based on different combinations of candidate explanatory variables is large enough such that calculation of posterior probabilities for all models is difficult or infeasible. Estimates and inferences are produced by averaging over models using the posterior model probabilities as weights, a procedure known as Bayesian model averaging. We illustrate the methods using a spatial econometric model of origin-destination population migration flows between the 48 U.S. states and the District of Columbia during the 1990-2000 period. There is a great deal of literature on Bayesian model comparison for nonspatial regression models, where alternative models consist of those based on differing matrices of explanatory variables. For example, Zellner (1971) sets forth the basic Bayesian theory behind model comparison for the case where a discrete set of m alternative models are under consideration. The approach involves specifying prior probabilities for each model as well as prior distributions for the regression parameters. Posterior model probabilities are then calculated and used for inferences regarding the alternative models based on different sets of explanatory variables. More recent works such as that by Fernandez, Ley, and Steel (2001 a, b) consider cases where the number of possible models m is large enough such that calculation of posterior probabilities for all models is difficult or infeasible. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo model composition methodology known as [MC.sup.3] proposed by Madigan and York (1995) has gained popularity in the mathematical statistics and econometrics literature (e.g., Denison, Mallick, and Smith 1998; Raftery, Madigan, and Hoeting 1997; Fernandez, Ley, and Steel 2001a, b). The popularity of [MC.sup.3] arises in part from its ability to provide a theoretically justifiable approach to a question that often arises in regression modeling–which explanatory variables are most important in explaining variation in the dependent variable vector? This article develops the [MC.sup.3] methodology for two important spatial econometric regression models that have received widespread application (LeSage and Pace 2004). A host of additional complications arise when attempting to extend regression-based approaches to these spatial regression estimators. We provide theoretical details regarding these issues as well as computationally efficient solutions.

Researchers have known since 1940 that some rodents voluntarily consume alcohol in a laboratory setting. [1] One can also assume that voluntary alcohol consumption by rodents and other mammals occurs in the wild, because some mammals, including rodents, occasionally consume large amounts of rotten fruits and exhibit abnormal behavioral patterns that may result from intoxication. Consequently, voluntary alcohol consumption, which is often observed in combination with palatable food or fluid intake, can be considered a part of the normal behavioral repertoire of rodents. These observations position rats and mice as ideal subjects for studying various aspects of human alcohol use, including alcohol reinforcement. [2] One commonly used approach to modeling human alcohol consumption in rodents are alcohol preference studies, in which the animals are given a choice between water and alcohol solutions and the investigators measure the amount consumed of each fluid. In comparison to other behavioral studies (e.g., anxiety tests), data on alcohol consumption levels obtained by such alcohol preference experiments show little variation, even when conducted in different laboratories (Crabbe et al. 1999) and different settings. Moreover, because alcohol reinforcement is mediated by brain structures that have been strongly conserved during evolution (i.e., subcortical structures), rodent studies have an enormous potential for further elucidating the neurobiological basis of alcohol consumption and alcohol reinforcement processes in humans. This article presents several rodent models that have been used in recent years to study various aspects of alcohol addiction. The article first reviews traditional alcohol preference models and their limitations. It then describes newer models aimed at helping researchers investigate the rodent equivalent of complex human behaviors, such as craving, relapse, and loss of control over drinking. These models have been validated in pharmacological studies and have provided some insight into the neurochemical and cellular changes underlying addictive behaviors.

Healthcare Foundation (AHF), the largest non-profit
HIV/AIDS organization in the US which currently provides medical care
and services to more than 100,000 individuals in 21 countries worldwide
in the US, Africa, Latin America/Caribbean and Asia, expressed its deep
disappointment today regarding President Obama’s proposal
to spend $45 million over the next five years—-only $9 million per
year—-on a national communications campaign on HIV/AIDS here in the
United States. The proposal—-Obama’s first official action on
AIDS—-falls far short of the need to adequately address the growing
domestic epidemic and appears to be window dressing of a potentially
politically-charged issue. The White House will partner with the
Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the campaign, the first
federally funded national domestic HIV/AIDS campaign in almost twenty
years according to White House officials.

“There are approximately 1.2 million people in the US living with
HIV/AIDS today. More than 300,000 of these individuals have never had an
HIV test and therefore do not know their HIV status. A $45 million
communications plan no matter how well intended will do little to help
identify those 300,000 infected individuals who may unknowingly be
infecting others,” said Michael Weinstein, President of AIDS

Concrete contractors are typically responsible for providing a concrete structure that meets the specifications. To do this, they must match the needed concrete mixture proportions and properties with appropriate finishing equipment, tools, methods, and personnel. By using their experience with different concretes for different applications, they provide the owner with a concrete structure that meets or exceeds specification requirements, even in adverse cold and hot-weather environments and with challenging time schedules. Concrete contractors traditionally purchased concrete from the ready-mixed concrete producer. Now, however, more and more construction managers (CM) and general contractors (GC) are purchasing the concrete. The usual reason for this practice is economics. Some CMs and GCs believe that by purchasing the concrete they can reduce the project cost for the owner. The CMs or GCs also can benefit when they mark up the concrete cost. The markup will vary depending on the local market and how much coordination is required to interact, communicate, and make mixture adjustments throughout the concrete placement schedule. Concrete is not a commodity material. Concrete contractors use their expertise and judgment to evaluate proposed mixtures. This evaluation is especially important for mixtures to be used for floors that require hard-trowel finishes. When the CM or GC purchases concrete, it eliminates a critical review and evaluation procedure that is inherent when the concrete contractor purchases the mixture. When concrete has been selected solely on the basis of compressive strength and price, a contractors means and methods cant always compensate for mixtures with poor placeability and finishability. Concrete contractors can be solely responsible for meeting the project specifications only when they purchase the concrete. If another party purchases the concrete, there is a joint responsibility for uniformity of surface appearance and texture, flatness, occurrence of cracking, and other specification requirements. ASCC contractors want the responsibility for conformance with project specifications and for owner satisfaction. This responsibility includes input–before and during construction–that helps the concrete producer develop a delivery schedule and supply concrete with mixture proportions that satisfy requirements for both placing and finishing and hardened concrete properties. ASCC concrete contractors will accept this responsibility only if they purchase the concrete. ASCC concrete contractors will also cooperate with CMs or GCs who purchase concrete when there is a willingness to share responsibility for meeting project specifications.
